Patawomeck Language Class 2022 - 2023

All classes will be in-person and virtual this year except for the Young Adult Class which will be virtual only.
All classes are free to members.

Each class progressively increases the level of knowledge of the individual and focuses on communication and interaction. Select the class that fits your language needs.  In order to graduate, you must attend at least 50% of the classes and give an oral presentation on the last day of class.

Adult Conversational Class

The Adult Conversational Language Class focuses on the basics of conversation without the technical aspects of the language. This class emphasizes the understanding of a regular mainstream of conversation on familiar topics and aims to build a solid foundation for beginners.

 

Class Title: Adult Conversational

 Age Range: 19 years old and up

Date / Time: Sunday* @ 3:00pm

Location: In-person at the Patawomeck Tribal Center and/or via Zoom

First Class Date: October 16, 2022

Last Class Date: May 7, 2023

Graduation Date: May 21, 2023

Cost: FREE

Instructor: Garry Cooper

*This class is given on alternating Sundays with the Adult Intermediate Class. Please see the schedule for exact dates.

 

The class normally starts the third Sunday in October and ends in May. This class will be taught in-person and via Zoom by Garry Cooper. Class time is at 3:00pm on the dates indicated on the 2022-2023 Language Class Schedule. Since space is limited to 20 students per class, if you register for the class, you will be contacted by email by the instructor confirming your seat in the class and with the necessary log in information for zoom (if applicable).

Adult Intermediate Class

The Adult Intermediate Language Class designed to improve upon an individual's understanding of the Patawomeck Langugage for a more in-depth knowledge of the language. Individuals at this level are expected to have some foundational knowledge of the Patawomeck Language. The following language areas are targeted: Learning phonics, nouns, and verbs. How our culture links to the language will also be explored.

 

Class Title: Adult Intermediate

Age Range: 19 years old and up

Date / Time: Sunday* @ 3:00pm

Location: In-person at the Patawomeck Tribal Center and/or via Zoom

First Class Date: October 16, 2022

Last Class Date: April 30, 2023

Graduation Date: May 21, 2023

Cost: FREE

Young Adult Language Class

The Young Adult Language Class focuses on young adults and presents the language in a way the young adults will understand and have a better chance at retaining the information. This is accomplished through age appropriate activities.

 

Class Title: Young Adult

Age Range: 10 - 18 years

Date / Time: Sunday @ 4:30pm

Location: Via zoom ONLY

First Class Date: October 16, 2022

Last Class Date: May 7, 2023

Graduation Date: May 21, 2023

Cost: FREE

Instructor: Dave Moseley

 

The class will be taught on Zoom by Dave Moseley. Class times are at 4:30pm on the dates indicated on the 2022-2023 Language Class Schedule. Children Circle Class

The Children Circle Language Class is specifically tailored to preschool and early elementary children. Age appropriate activities like singing, movement, arts and crafts, and snacks are used to assist the children in understanding and using our language. This class is designed to be fun and engaging, to keep the language alive for our people today. Language is a huge component in preserving our culture and traditions, and it is never too early to start learning! This class will be focused on conversational Patawomeck, basic phrases, colors, numbers, naming objects, etc. NiNaMen Kir! See you there!

 

Class Title: Children Circle

Age Range: 9 years old and younger

Date / Time: Sunday @ 2:30pm or 3:00pm*

Location: In-person at the Patawomeck Tribal Center and/or via Zoom*

First Class Date: October 16, 2022

Last Class Date: May 7, 2023

Graduation Date: May 21, 2023

Cost: FREE

Instructor: Heather Gray

 

*This class will meet in-person on the first Sunday of the month at 3:00pm for 15 to 20 minutes.  Otherwise this class will meet via zoom at 2:30pm for approximately 15 minutes. Please see the schedule for exact dates.
